admin writes, "Former Senator and Presidential Candidate Robert Dole, and old friend of Spruce Pine's Jim Brannigan called Jim Friday and said that he and Senator Elizabeth Dole would like to visit with Jim and his wife Betty."
In the phone conversation Jim realized that the Doles were not cognizant of the recent devistating fires that left a tragic mark on Spruce Pine and he decided that he would tour the burned out buildings with the Doles. Both of the Doles were heartsick when they viewed what had happened to the buildings on Locust Ave. the Railroad Depot and the Keene building. They visited with David and Trish Nevin owners of D.T's deli restaurant and their employees and other building owners and occupants and offered their condolences. The Doles were very impressed with the fact that Joe Miller, owner of Millers Insurance Group that was burned out early Saturday morning in the Keene building, didn't waste any time and had relocated at 7548 Highway 19-E and was open for business Monday morning.
The Doles visited with many of the town and Mitchell County officials and were informed our community was in need of help. Senator Elizabeth Dole and husband Bob were very understanding of the economic problems that Mitchell County and Spruce Pine are faced with. "Betty and I had a few moments to visit personally and Betty and Sen. Elizabeth Dole had an opportunity to shop in the Home of the Perfect Christmans Tree". Both of the Doles were very emphatic telling Brannigan that they would do all in their power to assist the community and stated to please let allof the affected people and the community know that they will provide any assistance necessary. Brannigan stated, "I am thrilled that the Doles came to Spruce Pine and recognize the fact that we need their help. They are just two fine old friends and I know they will help".
